Responsible
Management Plan
Most of the problems in the world that Reality Manufacturing
intends to address stem from a single basic cause; people are not taking
personal responsibility for environmental and social ecology in their daily
lives. Ozone technology provides us with
an analog, a structure, and a means whereby; people can be rewarded and
educated in taking personal responsibility for Environmental and Social
ecology. Ozone Technology is an analog
in that most of the applications of Ozone Technology are for de-toxification,
and ozone always must be generated on site.
Ozone Technology provides a structure by necessitating a
widespread sales, distribution and service network. Ozone Technology provides the means in the
form of money.
Our social and environmental problems are such that no
purely technological fix will solve them in time. This is mainly due to the great inertia
inherent in governmental and business bureaucracies, and due to the lack of any
common real world based cultural values that would encourage individuals to
solve everyday ecology problems on their own.
I propose to build a self replicating Environmental and
Social ecology based business structure that will address the problems listed
above.
The characteristics this business structure should exhibit
are as follows:
A) It should discourage internal
bureaucracy.
B) It should encourage trust using
the amount of internal paperwork generated as an inverse guide.
C) It should provide for a
continuing day to day education in Environmental and Social Ecology.
D) It should provide continuing
economic and social rewards to participating individuals.
E) It should be designed for rapid
growth in various social and economic climates since the Environmental and
Social Ecology problems are nearing the point where a mass die off of human and
other species would be unavoidable.
F) It should build cultural values
in our society; Culture is based on shared values. The shared values that Reality Manufacturing
would like to encourage are as follows:
a) Equal rights and opportunity for
all people.
b) Returning the earth and its
inhabitants to a healthy condition.
c)
The
resolution of global and personal problems in a nonviolent and non-destructive
way.
d) Zero or Negative population
growth.
e) Personal responsibility.
A. Bureaucracy is a worldwide problem. It saps the creative
energies that are needed to solve the problems of the world. In a bureaucracy, because there are so many
layers of authority, the chances of a new idea being sustained are reduced
almost to a vanishing point. Each layer
of the bureaucracy can say no and stop the idea, but all layers must say yes to
sustain the idea. A bureaucracy also
devours human and financial resources.
Large companies with only five layers of management consistently
outperform large companies with 15 layers of management. (Reference to In Search of Excellence).
We will rely extensively on participator (employee) problem
solving and management. Each working
group will elect a facilitator that will deal directly with the plant or application
manager. The plant manager will in some
instances be elected, in others self appointed.
When a product champion's new product becomes marketable he/she will be
in charge. The application manager will
report directly to the corporate management team and the corporate management
will report directly to the company president.
The Company president's job will be to establish a regular daily contact
with as many of the line level participators as possible. (Draw management structures).
B. Paper work usually exists as the result of a
lack of trust between two levels of a hierarchy. Most paper work is
generated to assure that a job is being done to the standards of management
this is often necessary in a company, because the workers aren't sufficiently
motivated to produce quality work in an efficient way without the threat of a
negative mark on paper to motivate them.
Paper and paperwork costs time and money and is
environmentally expensive. Any paper
work that can be eliminated will increase the company's profit margin. Some paper work may be essential either to
relate to outside bureaucracies or for the communication of necessary
information such as "we have an order for 3000 units due in two weeks"
or "we are out of part A" Other paper work such as "John Jones
only completed half of his widgets this week" is not necessary.
Reality Manufacturing's methods to reduce paper work will be
directed mainly to encouraging personal responsibility through individual
monetary and social incentives. We want
to double or triple an individual's base income through cash and stock
incentives. Some of the incentive value
will be rendered directly to the individual as a reward for creativity or
production effort. The rest of the
incentive value will go to the working group for production or creative
excellence. This encourages cooperation
and peer group pressure to meet or exceed performance standards.
C. Continuing education is both productive and
interesting. Reality Manufacturing is going to build an education
system into the corporate structure from the start. Participator Motivation depends to a large
extent on interest level and enthusiasm.
We are going to allocate from one hour a week initially to one hour a
day, as resources allow, for participator education. This hour will be devoted to explaining the
virtues and applications of Ozone Technology and the virtues and applications
of the Reality Manufacturing values and methods. Every effort will be made to create an
interactive atmosphere between instructors and participators during these class
sessions i.e. they will not be recorded and/or video taped but will be focused
on problem solving approaches to in house and out of house events. We will endeavor to generate the same kind of
enthusiasm for the world improving potential of ozone technology products and
Reality Manufacturing business methods. We
will actively solicit suggestions and ideas for improving work conditions,
production efficiency and new applications and methods. We will use this education to increase shared
values and build a company culture. We
will encourage every participator in the company to understand and promote the
company's technological and social products.
We will offer monetary or stock incentives to any employee who generates
a sale. The question of how it will be
determined whether a person generated a sale is an example of the kind of
question that will be discussed and resolved within the classroom structure.
—5—
There will be a focus within the educational process on
imparting information and building skills in the areas of selling, management
record keeping and research and development.
As Reality Manufacturing develops a solid financial base
educational emphasis will be shifted into areas that will enhance the quality
of life and creativity of the employee.
This will not be done, of course, at the expense of the earlier
program. A few examples of this second
type of education are; classes that will enhance participators' abilities to
handle stress, exercise programs, alcohol and drug problem solving, memory
training, eyesight improvement, nutritional information and left brain-right
brain coordination exercises.
In the work place every effort will be made to maintain
quiet so that communication between participators can be encouraged. We are creating enough reward incentives to
insure that this communication will not interfere with production. We will also build in an intercom/PA system
that will be used to broadcast music and short informational features to all
participators. The informational
features will be limited to approximately ten minutes per hour and will consist
of locally generated news, news items read from outside publications and
information about problems that Reality Manufacturing would like to solve.
The classes mentioned above would be voluntary with everyone
having the option of continuing work for that hour.
We will put a problem of the day up on the bulletin board to
brain storm solutions to during the day.
D. Economic and Social rewards will be built
into the Reality Manufacturing Corporate structure. Economic and social
rewards and cultural value building both work together synergistically. Any social behavior that is consistently
rewarded becomes a cultural value. We
live in a country where there are numerous rewards for environmentally and
socially damaging behavior built into the system. Reality Manufacturing is going to attempt to
identify these inappropriate rewards and set up appropriate rewards to counter
them. This will begin in the work place
but we hope to extend these incentives to our surrounding communities.
—6—
In addition to the usual production incentives we will offer
to share the increased income generated by an improved process, a money saving
or conservation measure for a year after the implementation of the
measure. This will be distributed as
follows 1/2 to the company, 1/4 to that person's working group, and 1/4 to the
individual promoting the measure.
Our goal is to set reward incentive levels so that least 90%
of the participators can at least double their income through incentive
rewards. We will also create an
atmosphere where social approval type rewards are encouraged. Half of the corporate management team will be
charged with delivering "kudos" for good work.
We are going to encourage, through this reward system both
recycling and conservation. As
participators begin to realize the value of these measures they will hopefully
begin to apply them in their lives outside of work.
As Reality Manufacturing generates more and more profits we
will begin the process of offering incentives to the next most local people
surrounding the company. I.e. first to neighborhood then to city then to
county then to the state etc. Here are
some examples of incentives that we may try to offer, first to in house
participators then to our surrounding communities.
1. Credit union will
offer lower interest loans on super insulated or solar in retrofit or new
construction. The company will offer
outright grants in some instances to encourage this type of construction. Amory Lovins and the Rocky Mountain Institute
have shown that conservation is cheaper than building new energy generation
systems even if it is done by the utility company. We will also encourage conservation by
supporting energy efficient water heating, lighting and cooking systems.
2. We will generally
try to do more business with those community businesses that support many of
our company goals. Where such businesses
don't exist or won't develop we will encourage, through financial and
management loans, such businesses to develop.
—7—
3. If conditions
warrant, we may set up co-ops or buyers' clubs to address a market gap that
isn't being filled.
4. We will set up a
new business development fund that will lend or grant money to responsible
individuals who want to set up a new business.
Using Reality Manufacturing's most successful business techniques we
will train the new entrepreneur and help the entrepreneur set up business in
his/her own way. We will provide an
umbrella organization to help the new entrepreneur in exchange for a token (1%)
share of the profits of the new business once the new business is turning a
profit.
Reality Manufacturing will of course offer these benefits
first and most readily to those businesses and individuals that support most of
our environmental and social ecology goals.
We believe that a company is most profitable and efficient
when it is generally operated from the bottom up rather than the top down. We intend that the management of Reality
Manufacturing will traditionally be recruited from the ranks of the line level
participators. We have as an overriding
company objective listening to the customer first, the line level second and
everyone else carefully. These
attitudes, when they are consistently demonstrated, should have a great deal of
reward incentive value to all the people who work with Reality Manufacturing.
E. Reality Manufacturing is going to build rapid growth into the
corporate structure. The problems, that ozone technology and
Reality Manufacturing both address in our world, are growing much more rapidly
than we are developing ways to solve them.
Reality Manufacturing and companies like Reality Manufacturing are
needed throughout the world to help in solving these problems. Our corporate goals and structure are
dedicated to empowering the individual.
We will empower the individual through economic stability, through
continuing education, and through solving ecological and social problems that
threaten the individual. But most of all
we encourage individuals to seek their own personal power in the world.
—8—
Power to make their own and their neighbors' lives better
through their own efforts. Power to hand
their children a world that is better, safer and cleaner than the world they
inherited.
To do these things the people and values of Reality
Manufacturing must encounter millions of people on a day to day basis. Our methods must not only work and work well
but they must be seen and emulated by as many individuals and groups as
possible. Here are a few of the growth
optimizing ideas that could help us realize that goal.
We will use all of the standard growth enhancing methods
such as advertising and others. In
addition we will train all of our employees as sales people so they can
effectively contact their cousin back east who is the assistant director of the
We will offer up to 75% of the commission our official sales
staff receives to an employee of Reality Manufacturing who sells our
product. We will also offer a half
commission to any non employee who sells our product. Anyone who generates repeat sales will be
offered a job in the company and/or a position with the sales staff.
Another growth optimizing idea was offered earlier under the
incentives heading. We will build the
social structure of Reality Manufacturing by encouraging entrepreneurs to join
in a limited partnership with Reality Manufacturing. We will also encourage in-house invention and
entrepreneurship by encouraging employee-participators to develop and market
their own products using Reality Manufacturing management, education and
money. These new in-house businesses
will be operated in a semi-independent way and the parent company will exercise
restraint in trying to manage them from the top down since good management in
one product area could be a disaster in another area. In exchange for the idea incubation offered
by the parent company the new division will return a small percentage to the
parent company.
We are in the process of devising a scheme whereby these new
small companies can in turn sponsor offspring.
In this biological analogy this self replication feature enhances rapid
expansion and promotion of the Environmental and social ecology values set
forth by the founders of Reality Manufacturing,
through information exchange, related sales efforts and high quality
standards common to all Reality Manufacturing and offspring companies, this
affiliated diversity will generate increased sales for all the companies,
subsidiaries and divisions involved.
F. The founders of Reality Manufacturing want to emphasize the
importance of culture building activities in the world. The haphazard
cultural structures that currently exist in most of the Western World almost
totally fail to address the most threatening problems facing modern society.
Many smaller homogeneous cultures in the
(a) The first goal in culture building is to draw on the
greatest possible resource base to optimize our efforts. The resource in culture building is of course
people.
People must feel empowered in order to have the strength and
will necessary to build the new cultural structures that need to be built. So the first priority in culture building is
to set up elements of culture that empower people. We have already discussed several of these
elements: Election of group facilitators, education, regular system wide
financial and social rewards, and support of the parent company in setting up
offspring divisions. The cultural
element that we want to introduce here is that of equal rights and
opportunities for all people. The
problems of our world are great enough that we cannot afford to under utilize
or disregard the contributions of the half of the population that are
women. Part of the culture built by
Reality Manufacturing
(10)
Will therefore be designed to aggressively seek the
participation and creativity of women on every level and in every area of the
company. We will seek to build cultural
structures within the company that are designed by women that will slightly
favor women until parity between men and women is firmly established and
appears to be a stable and enduring reality.
Everything stated above applies to other minorities in this country. We will seek to fully utilize the ethnic diversity
that is this country's greatest strength.
Company policy will be to seek the greatest ethnic diversity that is
possible and to fully utilize the differing viewpoints that are essential to
creating innovative solutions to the frightening scientific and social problems
that are facing the world.
(b) The second area of shared cultural values that Reality
Manufacturing would like to promote concerns the primary area that our initial
product addresses.
Ozone is probably the closest thing there is to a universal
detoxifier. Reality Manufacturing will
endeavor to put its cultural value building resources in line with its initial
product by building internal and external cultural values that support a world
wide effort to clean up the environment and by promoting genetic diversity
throughout the ecosystems.
We will support these things by encouraging recycling and
conservation in ever widening circles around each individuals involved with
Reality Manufacturing. We will offer
donations and grants to environmental organizations and groups that are in a
position to make a difference in the world.
We will seek the input of established environmental groups in
determining the direction and use of our research and development. We will strive to respond to criticism by
environmental groups of our own procedures by making the changes that they
recommend. Reality Manufacturing also
has some economic reasons for our environmental values. The die-off of mankind wouldn't be good for
business.
(11)
(c) The solution of global and personal conflicts through
nonviolent non-destructive means has the same economic value as above. Additionally gradual changes tend to be more
thorough.
Reality Manufacturing will not knowingly support violent
revolution, forced labor, religious or ethnic persecutions or any other type of
coercive behavior that demeans or dis-empowers anyone.
We will actively seek non-violent non-coercive methods of
conflict resolution within our organization that can be applied in dealing with
other people and organizations. In all
of our dealings with other countries we will try to apply our technologies and
organization to applications that will minimize conflict while encouraging
personal empowerment. We will offer our
technologies preferentially to those countries that don't use torture or murder
to suppress individual freedom or those countries that don't have political
prisoners or prisoners of conscience.
under repressive regimes whenever we have an opportunity to set up
business we will pursue a course that operates in small communities and that
empowers the people in the area by purchasing land and granting land to the
people as incentive for good work or for the discovery of non-chemical
pesticides of medical treatments. The
Reality Manufacturing company will keep 90% of its profits within the community
and will use the money for public education and public health measures in the
community. Of the remaining 10%, 9% will
be used to set other nearby communities with a similar profit making business
and one percent will go back to the parent company. We will attempt to prove the axiom that 1% of
plenty is worth more than 90% of poverty.
We will try to establish a demonstration that a healthy happy motivated
group of people produce more wealth (and pay more taxes) than a group of people
living at subsistence levels.
We are generally going to give preference to small
economically depressed communities in choosing the locations of new facilities.
-12-
(d) One existing cultural value that generally needs
changing in most cultures is a cultural emphasis on large families. This emphasis had value in the past for a
variety of reasons. Often in less
technological societies larger families meant a wider distribution of the work
load. Infant and youth mortality was
high and a high birth rate was necessary to maintain the culture. The average life span was so short that the
continuation of the species was sometimes dependent on large families. In the modern world there are many religious
and social cultures that emphasize large families. Quite often this happens when the religion or
culture cannot generate new adherents fast enough through other recruitment
methods.
In the modern world, most of the time these reasons are no
longer valid. Infant mortality is
decreasing and life span is increasing almost everywhere. In those areas where this is not true it is
generally because the areas has suffered such ecological damage as to make it
unable to sustain the existing population.
This usually occurs as the result of desertification caused by over
grazing or as the result of warfare caused by a struggle for meager resources
or both.
There are many short term solutions to the social and
environmental problems of Earth but the ultimate solution to these problems
remains population stabilization or reduction.
This reduction will ultimately take place by starvation,
warfare, and disease or repression or as a result of the deliberate and
responsible decision of every individual, every state and every nation to limit
their own contribution to the population problem.
Reality Manufacturing recognizes that an improved standard
of living generally results in a decrease in the birth rate. So we will try to improve the standard of
living throughout the world. But one of
the first results of an improved standard of living is a decrease in infant
mortality and an increase in life span.
In cultures where there are cultural ideals that encourage large
families an improved standard of living usually results in a population
explosion which leads to a reduction in the standard of living.
(13)
In these cases Reality Manufacturing will seek to encourage
population stabilization or reduction through the culture building incentive
methods that our company is dedicated to developing.
(e) Personal responsibility is the underlying value that all
of Reality Manufacturing Environmental and Social ecology programs are
ultimately dependent on and most concerned with cultivating. The name Reality Manufacturing is based on
the premise that we manufacture our own reality. We have created, both individually and
collectively, these messes that confront us and if we are to clean up these
messes it will be the result of a cooperative effort between all individuals.
These individual efforts can only be directed in a unified
purpose by creating elements of a common culture. The shared values listed above are probably
the minimum necessary to save our planet.
From this point we are discussing values that are not necessary to save
our planet but rather values that will produce all the superlatives: abundance,
excellence, elegance, beauty, and inner growth.
Just as humanity's true measure is not its mere survival but
its dreams, so a truly excellent company cannot be measured merely by profits
but must seek to fulfill a common dream.
(f) The exploration of individual and group creative and
expansive potentials is our way of expanding the envelope of human
endeavor. There are many entirely
practical reasons why this is a cultural value that we will support. Much of invention and creativity comes from
intuitive areas of the human psyche that are not quantifiable or easy to
understand. We want to invest in creativity
because it is likely to give us the greatest returns on our investment. We will therefore support education and
workshops in such areas as memory improvement, dreams note keeping, health
improvement and well being and artistic skills.
Invention often takes place through the cross pollination of
ideas from divergent and seemingly unrelated fields. Reality Manufacturing will build a culture
that encourages integration of this type of diversity into a corporate
structure for the purpose of solving the technical and social problems for continual
human survival and prosperity on the Earth.
